A few important numbers from the most recent Eastern District of North Carolina Status Conference report.
To date there are 152,377 administrative claims filed with the Department of the Navy. The Department of the Navy will continue to accept and review claims until the statutory designated final claim date of August 8, 2024. Although difficult to predict, we anticipate at least an additional 275,000 administrative claims to be filed prior to the final claim date.
Out of the 152,377 administrative claims filed, the Department of the Navy and the Department of Justice have extended offers under the previously announced Elective Option to 80 claimants. Of that number, ten claimants have accepted the offers and been paid. Average accepted payments on the ten offers is $205,000 per claim.
The recent Eastern District of North Carolina Status Conference Report noted a total of 1,476 lawsuits filed and assigned to the various judges in the Eastern District. Of that amount, 100 have been selected for “bellwether” cases. Those cases are “representative” cases that will be tried over the next 12 months. The Plaintiffs’ Leadership Group has established a short form complaint that will allow for expedited filings
